Google Ads for Home Services: How NJ Trades Turn Searches Into Calls

A pipe bursts in a Clifton basement at 11 p.m. The homeowner grabs a phone, searches “emergency plumber” and calls one of the first names on the screen. Nobody compares five websites at that hour. So when you run Google Ads for home services, build everything around one result: a phone call. The caller should need your trade and live in a town you actually serve.

Plenty of contractors have tried paid search and walked away after paying for clicks that never rang the phone, or for calls from three counties away. This guide covers Local Services Ads, call-focused search campaigns and the settings that keep your budget close to home.

Decide What a Good Call Looks Like First

Before you pick a single keyword, decide what counts as a win. For most trades, it isn’t a click or even a form. Instead, it’s a call from a homeowner in your area who needs a job you do. So write down your three most profitable jobs, the towns you cover and the hours someone actually picks up the phone.

Then set up tracking that matches. Google can count calls as conversions through call reporting, which uses Google forwarding numbers to log calls from your ads. Add a minimum call length, so a 15-second wrong number doesn’t count as a lead. After that, compare those calls with your booked jobs every month. That last step shows you which keywords make money and which ones only make noise.

Local Services Ads or Search Ads for Home Services?

Google offers two main paid options for trades. They appear in different places, charge in different ways and reward different habits.

How Local Services Ads Work

Local Services Ads often appear near the top of searches for trades like plumbing, HVAC, electrical work and roofing. The big difference is how you pay. With Local Services Ads, you pay for leads related to your business, not for clicks. In select categories, qualifying businesses can also display a Google Verified badge.

To get in, you’ll go through Google’s screening and verification checks. Depending on your trade, that can include background checks plus license and insurance documents. The process can take a while, so have your paperwork ready before you apply.

Once you’re live, your bid is only part of the picture. Google’s page on how Local Services ad rankings work lists responsiveness, reviews, rating and profile quality among the factors. It also says missed calls may hurt your responsiveness. In other words, the company that answers the phone gets rewarded.

Where Search Campaigns Still Win

Standard search ads give you far more control. You choose the keywords, write the headlines and send people to a page built for that exact job. That matters for planned, high-ticket work like a furnace replacement in Morris County or a new roof in Ocean County. It also matters if your trade isn’t eligible for Local Services Ads.

If your trade qualifies, running both usually makes sense. Let Local Services Ads catch urgent calls for your core services. Then use search campaigns to go after the specific, profitable jobs you want more of.

How to Build Google Ads for Home Services Around Calls

A search campaign can look busy and still leave the phone quiet. These settings keep it focused on calls:

  • Add call assets. With call assets, people can tap a button to call you straight from the ad. Don’t type your number into the ad text itself, because Google may disapprove the ad.
  • Match the schedule to your phones. You can set call assets to show only during the hours you answer. If nobody picks up after 6 p.m., don’t pay for calls at 8 p.m.
  • Split urgent and planned work. Emergency searches like “no heat” or “water heater leaking” deserve their own campaign and budget. Meanwhile, planned jobs like a bathroom remodel can sit in a separate campaign with steadier spending.
  • Write ads that sound like the call. Name the service and the town, then give a real reason to pick you. Same-day service and free estimates work well, but only if they’re true.

Credentials help too. New Jersey requires home improvement contractors to show their registration number on advertisements distributed in the state, so put it on your landing pages as well. Licensed plumbers, electricians and HVAC contractors answer to their own boards, so check those advertising rules too.

Keywords That Sound Like a Phone Call

The best keywords describe a problem in the homeowner’s own words. Think “AC not cooling,” “sump pump failed” or “roof leak repair near me.” These searches come from people with a real problem today. By contrast, one-word keywords like “roofing” or “plumber” pull in job seekers, students and DIYers. Google also makes broad match the default, so start with phrase and exact match and widen only once your call data is solid.

Draw a Service Area That Matches Your Trucks

Loose location settings are one of the most common budget leaks we see. By default, Google can show your ads to people who have simply shown interest in your area. Instead, switch the setting so you reach people located in, or regularly in, the places you target.

Next, draw the map around where your trucks actually go. Picture an HVAC company based in Wayne that targets a 25-mile radius around its shop. That circle crosses the Hudson, so it should exclude Manhattan and the Bronx. On the other hand, a roofer in Toms River might cover only Ocean County and southern Monmouth. Tolls, traffic and drive time all belong in that decision.

Your Business Profile should tell the same story. Our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile for contractors covers hidden addresses and service areas in detail.

Cut Wasted Clicks With Negative Keywords

Negative keywords stop your ads from showing on searches that will never pay off. Every trade has its own list, but most start with the same basics:

  • Jobs and training: jobs, salary, apprentice, school, license exam
  • Do-it-yourself: DIY, how to, parts, supply, manual
  • Places you skip: town names people type, such as Staten Island for a plumber in Middlesex County

After launch, open the search terms report every week for the first month. It lists the actual searches that triggered your ads. Add anything irrelevant as a negative, and your waste should shrink over time.

Paid search advertising and Google Ads campaign management

Answer Every Call Like You Paid for It

Here’s the part no ad setting can fix. If calls go to voicemail, you pay for the lead and still lose the job. With Local Services Ads, missed calls can also hurt your ranking. So treat the phone as part of your ad budget.

  • Route ad calls to whoever is free, not only to the owner in a crawl space.
  • Use an answering service after hours, or pause ads when no one can pick up.
  • Return missed calls within minutes, not at the end of the day.
  • If you add text follow-up, get proper consent first and follow federal TCPA rules.

A CRM set up to log every call and flag missed ones makes this much easier. It also ties ad spend to booked jobs, which is the number that matters most.

Where Paid Ads Fit With Your Profile and Local SEO

Paid search buys you a spot today. Your Business Profile and website earn free visibility more slowly, over months. You need both, because ads stop the moment you stop paying. Google Ads for Home Services: Common Questions

How much should home services companies spend on Google Ads?

Work backward from your own numbers. Say a typical repair brings in $600 and you book about half the people who call. If you’re comfortable spending $120 in ads to win that job, you can afford roughly $60 per call. Multiply that by the calls you want each month for a starting budget, then adjust once real call data comes in.

Can I pause ads when my crews are booked?

Yes. You can lower budgets or pause campaigns whenever you need to. For example, an HVAC company might trim spending during mild spring weeks, then raise it when the first heat wave hits. Still, avoid constant on-and-off switching, because automated bidding learns best from steady data.
